In search of a better life, Max and Leo are taken by their mother, Lucia, from Mexico to Albuquerque in the United States. While waiting for her to return from work, the kids listen to tales, rules of conduct and English lessons recorded by Lucia on an old tape recorder. They also build an imaginary universe with their drawings and dream about mom's promise of going to Disneyland.
This is the second feature film by Mexican Samuel Kishi Leopo who presents a semi-autobiographical story. The director and writer used elements from his own story of migration to the USA with his mother and brother. His brother Kenji Kishi, also took part in the film as the composer of the soundtrack. In the movie, brothers Max and Leo are played by real-life siblings Maximiliano and Leonardo Nájar Márquez, whilst the mother is played by Martha Reyes Arias.
The Wolves won the Generation Kplus Sidebar last year at the Berlin International Film Festival where it also received the Peace Film Award and it has been collecting prestigious awards around film festivals since then. In the UK, it premiered in 2020 during lockdown in the online collaborative film festival Amplify!
