Originally created during the Industrial Revolution as a way of linking Bristol to Reading, the Kennet and Avon Canal now remains a thriving place for walkers, cyclists, and boaters. The Kennet and Avon canal offers a great spot to let your mind relax and reenergise this year.
Stretching across the centre of the county, the Kennet and Avon Canal passes through many of Wiltshire’s iconic towns such as Pewsey, Devizes, and Bradford on Avon. Whilst also running through two National Landscapes in Wiltshire, the canal is often surrounded by stunning countryside and picturesque villages. Perfect for a slow stroll or family cycle ride, be sure to enjoy the spectacular views that accompany the Kennet and Avon canal. With a beautiful setting on the water’s edge, there are plenty of local pubs and tearooms offering the perfect place to stop for a light refreshment during your journey. Here you can truly digest the magnificent scenes along the canal, from narrow boats passing by, to the sound of birds singing upon branches above.
Venturing along the canal will have you rewarded by many sights of beauty, history, and nature. From a stately heron amongst the shallow waters, to a kingfisher darting past, the canal is home to some incredible species! On the water’s edge, be sure to discover aqueducts and colourful narrowboats as well as historical sites including Crofton Beam Engines near Marlborough and Caen Hill in Devizes. The Caen Hill flight of 29 locks stretches over 2 miles and is one of the most famous along the Kennet and Avon canal!
