About
Lord Margadale is kindly opening his gardens on Sunday 8th June 2025 between 12pm - 5pm in aid of The Lady Garden Foundation.
Unlike many gardens Fonthill House benefits from alkaline soil as well as acid, so is able to grow virtually anything. As you wander around all the different areas looking at the vast array of flowers, shrubs, trees and plants do look out for some of particular beauty such as the Argyrocytisus battandieri (Pineapple Broom) found in the Fountain garden, which really does smell like pineapples that will astonish anyone who has never smelled its scent before. The Liriodendron tulipifera 'Aureomarginata' (the Variegated Tulip Tree) that you'll find in South Wood, the 8 beautiful Cornus Kousa trees (where some of the stalls will be situated), the gorgeous Crinodendron hookerianums (Chilean Lantern Trees) that will be in full glory in the Sunken Garden and in North Wood, not forgetting on the southwest facing wall overlooking the tennis court are 10 different varieties of fig. And there's so very much more. If you know and love the William Pye working font in Salisbury Cathedral, you will enjoy seeing an almost identical fountain here by him that was made and installed in 2014.
There will be some wonderful stalls selling a range of different items and some delicious refreshments from Sol Bakery and a wine stall. Entrance is £10 per person if booked in advance via Eventbrite, £12 on the gate and children can go free. Well behaved dogs are welcome on leads. Unfortunately, there is restricted wheelchair access.
