Wiltshire’s rolling hills, breath-taking landscapes and historic, cottage-lined villages make it a favourite location for film and TV producers. Offering the perfect backdrop for the big screen, Wiltshire has taken centre stage in a whole range of recognisable shows over the years, from Sci-Fi adventures to Jane Austen classics. Here are just a few of Wiltshire’s famous Film and TV Locations…
Lacock
Owned by the National Trust, the charming village of Lacock has been a go-to location for historical films and dramas including Pride and Prejudice and Wolf Hall. A short walk from the main streets of Lacock, is the iconic Abbey, Tudor home of the Talbots. Its dramatic Gothic architecture can be recognised most notably in the first 2 Harry Potter films, where its interior appeared as the Potions and Dark Arts classrooms at Hogwarts!
Corsham
Corsham’s preserved High Street created the perfect backdrop for BBC series, Poldark. Despite the show being set by the Cornish coast, the picturesque Wiltshire town stood in for 18th-Century Truro throughout the series. Other popular period shows filmed here include Tess of the d’Urbervilles, Lark Rise to Candleford and the most recent Disney+ series, Rivals!
Rivals was also filmed in Tetbury, just across the Wiltshire borders, where the production team took over this Cotswolds town for around a week of filming, transporting it back to the 1980s!
Stonehenge
The iconic stone circle is known worldwide for its prehistoric tales and orientation on the rising and setting sun. Because of this, many major productions have chosen to include it on the big screen. Thor: The Dark World, Season 5 of Doctor Who and Transformers: The Last Knight are amongst the most popular that Stonehenge has been included in.
Wilton House
Located a short drive from the centre of Salisbury is Wilton House, one of the first Wiltshire landmarks to feature in Bridgerton! Its grounds, including the iconic Palladian Bridge, was featured in several outdoor scenes. But the actual house portrayed not one but four different residences: the Duke and Duchess of Hastings, Lady Danbury and Queen Charlotte!
Other iconic films set at Wilton House include Tomb Raider, Emma and Netflix series, The Crown.
Old Wardour Castle
Located in Tisbury, just outside of Salisbury, is Old Wardour Castle. Not only do these medieval ruins have a dark historical past dating back to the 1390s, but it is also best known for its feature in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. The Castle stands in for the Loxley’s family home and looks slightly more intact due to special effect painting!
Bradford on Avon
Just less than an hour’s drive north of Old Wardour Castle, is another Robin Hood location! Bradford on Avon’s Tithe Barn and surrounding areas were used in Robin Hood of Sherwood. The town was also famously featured in the film version of Downton Abbey in 2019, as well as Netflix series, Cursed.
Castle Combe
One of the most picturesque villages in Wiltshire and located in the Cotswolds National Landscape, Castle Combe is a favourite for film makers, especially those looking for the ‘quintessentially English’ backdrop. Iconic movies include Doctor Dolittle, Stardust and War Horse.
There are plenty more iconic filming locations in Wiltshire. Plan your visit to one this season…
