Tell us a bit about yourself and your role at Meadowbank House Bed & Breakfast
Eleven years of running Meadowbank House B and B and I still love it. Really enjoy meeting interesting people and helping them to make the most of their stay with us. We get lots of walkers walking The Ridgeway National Trail or exploring local circular walks. Matthew and I are keen walkers too so have maps and walk books and are happy to suggest walks or itineraries.
We are located in the North Wessex Downs AONB and it shows! There is such beautiful landscape and views and historic places to visit on the doorstep. Richard Jefferies‘ favourite walk was gradually ascending Liddington Hill to clear his head and give him joy.
We have invested in an EV charging dedicated for guest use and we are constantly trying to achieve a low carbon footprint.
Guests can expect to feel valued and welcomed. We want to discreetly provide perfect service so that guests have everything they need. I am a bit of a perfectionist so pay attention to every detail.
I like to add little personal touches to the rooms, some fresh flowers from the garden, homemade biscuits and carefully chosen books reflecting local lore or history.
We have added a license and have an extensive wine list available to buy.
Meadowbank House Bed and Breakfast offers fantastic food, we have an allotment and we grow lots of soft fruit for jams and cakes. I only buy meat from one of our local butchers and it is guaranteed Wiltshire pork. I make my own granola and fruit compotes. We welcome all guests with the option of a tray of tea or coffee and homemade cake or scones on arrival.
We have a gorgeous garden with lovely views and a designated sitting area for our guests.
The attention to detail is what really makes us a special place to stay.
Where is your favourite Wiltshire picnic spot?
A favourite picnic spot is Long Dean over near Castle Combe. It is accessible by walking along footpaths either from the tiny hamlet of Ford or along small roads up off the A420. There is a lovely millstream and places to sit next to the babbling water to picnic. My children and I have paddled in the water there on many summer picnics! There are lovely circular walks there starting either near Ford or up at Castle Combe.
The valley the other side of the A420 is another gorgeous walk along the valley of the Bybrook. Parking at Ford and walking along the valley to Slaughterford and over to Biddestone with two lovely pubs and a beautiful village pond and green with ducks wandering about.
Where do you like to eat in Wiltshire?
My top three favourite places to eat in are The Bell at Ramsbury which is great for food, beer and people watching! Silks on the Downs which is really friendly and has super food and wine list and the Royal Oak at Bishopstone which is renowned for the organic pork along with many other delicious and local delicacies, don’t believe everything they tell you though – there are some wags there with a keen sense of humour.
Where are your favourite places to visit and why?
We love the White Horse at Alton Barnes, there is a terrific circular walk starting just south of Avebury at West Kennet. Beautiful scenery and absolutely stunning views.
I like to mosey about some of the small market towns to shop in the independent and interesting shops. I go to Marlborough every week to buy my sausages and bacon from the butcher and so enjoy wandering along the high street with the magnificent town hall in the background.
Wayland’s Smithy on the Ridgeway above Ashbury is a very special place for a gentle walk and soak up the atmosphere.
Do you have any hidden Wiltshire gems that you’d like to share with our readers?
Well, they won’t be hidden anymore if I tell! I know a few secret Combes over Bishopstone way where I like to walk with larks overhead and wildflowers and butterflies.
I’ll share my gems with guests when they come to stay!
