Lucknam Park, Colerne

A Palladian mansion in 500 acres of parkland and gardens, Lucknam Park is a grand destination perfect for special occasions. You arrive via a mile-long avenue of lime and beech trees and enter a world that features its own arboretum and rose garden, horse riding, a luxury spa and so much more. Children are treated like mini VIPs with sports and pony rides available, while adults delight in the understated elegance and immaculate service. Helen Browning’s Royal Oak, Bishopstone

A pub-with-rooms set on a 1,500-acre organic farm, Helen Browning’s Royal Oak is an entirely unique experience. Owned by Helen Browning OBE, chief executive of the Soil Association, it's set in a rural village on the Marlborough Downs and is a charming combination of connectivity with the land and old school fun. Guests dine on hearty pub fare, while rooms are located in a rustic adjacent building. There's a focus on animal welfare and wildlife conservation, and alongside that there's a joyful conviviality to the experience, particularly in the communal space, The Wallow, which has books, tea and coffee, an honesty bar, fridge and record player.  The inn also has its own farm shop so you can take a little piece of the experience home with you.

Whatley Manor, Easton Grey

A five-star, award-winning, country house hotel, Whatley Manor is well known for its style, sophistication, spa and Michelin Star restaurant. With just 23 rooms and suites, there's an intimacy to this unequivocally romantic hotel, and alongside the luxury of it all there's a true sense of wellness. The gardens - set in 12 acres and with 26 individual areas - are wonderful to explore. Meanwhile, the Aquarias Spa is a destination in its own right, complete with a restorative thermal suite and treatments from GAIA. Naturally, sustainable Michelin Star dining at The Dining Room, under the direction of Executive Chef, Ricki Weston, is not to be missed, but equally their second dining space, Grey's is a more relaxed but delicious experience.

Beechfield House, Beanacre

An Italianate Victorian property in woodland and gardens, Beechfield House gives you the sense that you're staying at the home of an excellent friend - if your friend happened to live in a palatial abode. An enchanting retreat, its rooms are spread across the main house and adjacent buildings, and range from intimate spaces to grand rooms with handsome four-poster beds. Thoughtful details are peppered around, such as a guide to Buddhism as well as the usual Gideon Bible in a bedside cabinet. A popular feature is the outdoor heated pool, which also has its own bar. Dining is in a low-lit blue dining room where they serve up beautiful dishes such as pan-seared scallops with wild garlic or sirloin steak with twice-cooked chips, and generous servings of vegetables and salad from the kitchen garden.

Bishopstrow Hotel & Spa, Warminster

Renowned as a romantic retreat, Bishopstrow Hotel & Spa is a picturesque Grade II listed Georgian mansion surrounded by rolling countryside, meadows and woodland near the river Wylye. Family-friendly as well as elegant, it's the perfect combination of homeliness (think log fires and cosy lounges), wellbeing and opulence. The Three Daggers, Westbury

The Spa Barn is a lovely addition just across the road from the pub - offering tranquil countryside views, wellness activities and an extensive treatment list - for what appears to be a pub with rooms on arrival, The Three Daggers is a place that surprises and delights in all the best ways.

Woolley Grange, Bradford-on-Avon

The Grade II listed building is said to have been the 18th-century home of the owner of the dye works next door, Charles Timbrell. There are pictures of its past peppered about, but today guests will find stylish rooms to stay in complete with modern art and quirky vintage finds, some with freestanding cast-iron baths and others preferring a more contemporary Nordic feel. Food is unpretentious and local, served amidst impressive architecture or outside in the summer sun.
