On the second weekend of February we welcomed Kate Turnbull (@knittylicious) to takeover our Instagram account.
As well as posting some fantastic photos from around the county, Kate live posted through Instagram stories and showed us beautiful Bradford on Avon, and other traditionally English, and Wiltshire places through her eyes.
During the takeover we learnt a lot too, Kate shared some interesting facts and history about Wiltshire that we weren’t even aware of! So if you’re interested in history and Wiltshire then this takeover is for you...
Bratton Camp and White Horses
'Hello! My name is Kate (@knittylicious) and I’m very happy to be taking over the Visit Wiltshire Instagram account this weekend as I’m a huge Wiltshire enthusiast.'
Bradford on Avon
'This picture of Tory in Bradford on Avon was taken a few weeks ago at dawn, from outside the Chapel of St Mary, Tory. ‘Tory’ here derives from ‘tor’ – the word for a prominent hill. The steep hillside means you get great views over the town at any time of day. But the hillside itself is lit up at dawn (on sunny days, anyway), and the terraces seem to have their own, warm microclimate. This row of houses was built between 1795 and 1812 and is reached by footpath only – no roads.'
Iford Manor Gardens
'One of my favourite places to visit is the garden at Iford Manor. The Manor was bought by architect and garden designer Harold Peto in 1899 and he set about transforming the garden into what you see today.'
Oare, Wiltshire
'A couple of weeks ago I went for a walk on Martinsell Hill, above the village of Oare. This hill really has it all: history, views, and sheep! I found the earthworks in this picture particularly intriguing. There are earthworks all over the hill, and they show up really well in the light at this time of year. '
Sherrington
'Water is quite a feature of the picturesque village of Sherrington. From the late 19th century until the early 1970s, watercress was grown here. There are a large number of thatched cottages here, as there are throughout this valley.'
