The school holidays may be pretty much over but that doesn’t stop the fun here in Wiltshire. During September, we’ve plenty of events and activities to keep all of the family entertained, whether you are here for a short break or just fancy a day trip.
Enjoy one of our many festivals taking place this month
If you fancy getting active then why not start of the month by taking part in one of the guided walks that are planned for the Bradford on Avon Walking Festival. Walks vary in length and cover a variety of themes including the popular ghost walk.
Try your hand at canoeing, take a boat trip or cheer on your favourite team on the raft race at the Melksham Food and River Festival. Activities in the park include a chilli-eating competition, music and children’s entertainment, plus entry is free!
Foodies should keep their diaries free for the annual Salisbury Food and Drink Festival taking place on Sunday 10 September. Sample local produce, enjoy a brew in the beer tent and watch cookery demonstrations on the live stage.
Over 50 hot air balloons will take to the sky at Longleat for this year’s Sky Safari Festival from 15-17 September (weather permitting). A great chance to see balloons in every conceivable shape, size and colour.
At the end of the month, Marlborough will yet again be buzzing, this time with the arrival of the Marlborough Literature Festival. Think talks, book readings and children’s activities and you’ll get this gist of this great annual festival.
Learn new skills and get creative
Take part in workshops run by expert craft makers and artists at the Salisbury Contemporary Craft event on 8-9 September in the Cathedral Close. There’s also the chance to explore and buy hand-crafted pieces by some of the country’s best contemporary craft makers and designers.
Any students heading off to university who currently lack culinary skills should look out for one of the Student Survival Workshops at The Farm Cookery School. Get the chance to learn how to cook easily and healthily whilst on a budget.
Fun for all the family
Re-enactment groups and military vehicles will descend on Swindon & Cricklade Railway for the Wartime Weekend over the 9-10 September. Join in by dressing up in 1940s attire and watch the live ‘battles’ commence.
The Market Square of Devizes will be taken over on 23 September for Wiltshire Wildlife Trust’s Country Comes to Town event. This free event celebrates ‘wild Wiltshire’ and features children’s activities, food and cooking plus wildlife experiences.
The UK’s only track-based Mini Show takes place on 30 September at Castle Combe Circuit. You’ll see hundreds of Minis on display and the opportunity to watch track action take place on this famous circuit.
