Deep in the Wiltshire countryside, and just a short distance from Caen Hill Locks on the Kennet & Avon Canal, you’ll find the Rowdey Cow Farm Café and Ice Cream Parlour. It was my first visit here, I’m normally driving past on my way to meetings, but this time I made the effort to pop in, after all I was pretty sure they had some ice cream with my name on it!
I arrived at the café at 10am and noticed that there were already several other customers waiting for the doors to open, from couples through to people with young families as well as a couple of workmen who ordered the café’s cooked breakfast.
I then had the really enviable task then of selecting which of the fourteen flavours of homemade ice cream I would try. The ice cream is made from the milk of the farm’s own cows. In the end I decided upon Snickers flavour and I have to conclude that it was a pretty good decision!
Although the weather was a bit overcast, it was still warm enough to sit outside and take in the views of the surrounding fields. There are several animals on the farm including goats, geese, llamas and of course, the herd of cows. For young visitors there is a small play area and some miniature tractors that you can ride on in one of the barns.
After my visit, I travelled a couple of miles down the road to Wadworth Brewery. It’s not just the children that are on their holidays at the moment, it was also time for the brewery’s three Shire horses to take their holidays too!
Max, Monty and Archie normally stay in Wadworth’s stables when they aren’t out and about delivering the beer, but for a couple of weeks of the year they enjoy a holiday to a nearby field. Before they go on their holidays, the trio head to the Visitor Centre where they enjoy a pint of ale and lots of fusses from well-wishers before they begin their trip. I was amazed how many people turned up to see them and it was interesting to be able to chat with the horses’ grooms.
This year, the horses are taking their break at Bulkington, a village a few miles from Devizes before they return later in the summer to resume their deliveries and visits to various shows. They are a lovely addition to this traditional brewery, and it’s always a delight to see the horses when in the area.
If you are interested in meeting the Wadworth Shire horses please contact Wadworth Brewery’s Visitor Centre on 01380 732277 or find out more here.
