As you drive around the hustle and bustle of Swindon you wouldn’t think that just a short journey away is the extensive farmland of Roves Farm. Near to the village of Sevenhampton you travel down a long country lane to Roves Farm passing herds of cows and flocks of sheep in adjacent fields.
The day I visited was in the school holidays so the farm was buzzing with excited children rushing around on the newly-built outdoor playground – despite the rain that decided to start just as I arrived.
My first stop was to the welcome barn – where the admissions desk is held. I was presented with a wrist band and a ticket to go on a tractor ride should I choose to. In here there’s a very popular café and seating area and an indoor playground that proved very popular with the young children there.
Wristband proudly on display I then headed in to the new pets corner barn where you can pet goats, llamas, guinea pigs, sheep and rabbits. There are staff on hand to answer the children’s questions and to supervise the handling sessions.
In the main animal barn there were several litters of pigs at various ages. One of the little piglets was cheekily running about and even came up to have a ‘selfie’ on my phone!
Daisy, a Highland Cow – with some pretty impressive horns was also in this barn with her four-day old calf, Douglas… so cute!
I then braved the drizzle and headed towards the vegetable patch where children can learn about the different crops that can be grown. There are other animal paddocks too with cows, goats, geese, ducks and some very friendly donkeys.
As part of your admission you get the opportunity to go on a tractor ride and during the summer months you can watch animal racing in the afternoons. New for 2014 there’s a den building area too where two acres of willows are set aside – if I were still a child I know I’d love this!
Roves Farm also put on a lot of family friendly events throughout the year including a no big bangs fireworks party and Christmas Nativity.
