About
Giacomo Puccini's Turandot was conceived as his final opera during a period of personal and global turmoil, reflecting the chaos of European diplomacy and his own struggles with disease and old age. Inspired by a 13th-century Persian epic, the opera allowed Puccini to escape into an exotic world filled with seductive sounds and symbols, as the cold-hearted Princess Turandot learns the transformative power of love and forgiveness.
This is a recording of the 2018 production at the Teatro Real, directed by the renowned Robert Wilson. Known for his groundbreaking work on Einstein on the Beach and Pelléas et Mélisande, Wilson brings his visionary artistry to Puccini's evocative score, creating a visually stunning and dramatic experience. With a stellar cast led by Irene Theorin (Turandot), Gregory Kunde (Calaf), and Yolanda Auyanet (Liù), conducted by Nicola Luisotti, this recorded performance has received widespread acclaim for its exceptional performances and striking visuals.
