About
On 3 September Hurn Court Opera brings Purcell's much-loved baroque opera Dido and Aeneas to Wilton Parish Church. Showcasing a cast of rising young vocal stars, a creative team including former Royal Ballet Principal Zenaida Yanowsky as Movement Director and baroque strings led from the harpsichord by HCO Artistic Director, Lynton Atkinson, this fully staged production combines Purcell's music with stylised movement and hints of Oriental formality. Sung in English, the poignant story tells of the tragic love between Dido, Queen of Carthage and Trojan prince Aeneas, culminating in the beautiful Dido's lament, frequently named the nation's favourite aria. Bournemouth-based Hurn Court Opera was founded in 2017 to provide quality performance opportunities for young classical singers nearing or at the end of their conservatoire studies. Through opera, recitals, masterclasses and the annual national HCO Singer of the Year Competition, it gives selected singers freelance work and exposure to artists at the top of the profession. For audiences, it gives the chance to hear the vocal stars of tomorrow in local venues.
