Join us for a Medieval feast of family friendly drop-in activities every Tuesday and Thursday this summer, inspired by our current exhibition, Re/imagining Maud Heath, part of the 550th anniversary celebrations of Maud Heath's Causeway.
Week 1: Myths and Legends, Tuesday 30 July & Thursday 1 August
Who was Maud Heath and what did she do? Explore the myths and legends which surround Medieval marvel Maud Heath. Find out about the Medieval Mummers, the plays they performed, and the costumes they wore. Make a mythical dragon, and Mummer arm or ankle band, and re-enact the popular legend of George and the Dragon.
Week 2: Medieval Markets, Foods and Trades, Tuesday 6 August & Thursday 8 August
Maud Heath's Causeway provided a safe and dry route to get to market but what could you buy or sell when you got there? Discover what life was like in Medieval Times and how people traded goods, food, and crafts at the market. Make your own mini market stall and decide what you will sell at the market!
Week 3: Looking After The Past, Tuesday 13 August & Thursday 15 August
Maud's gift didn't just allow a causeway to be built, it meant that it could be maintained for future generations. Join Chippenham Museum volunteers and conservators from the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre, to learn how we look after Museum objects. Take part in our trail and hunt out the pests before they have a chance to munch on our Museum objects.
Week 4: Heraldry Design and Coat of Arms, Tuesday 20 August & Thursday 22 August
Find out about the use of heraldry in Medieval Times and use the heraldic code to help us design a coat of arms for Maud Heath. Then design your own and make a shield to display it on.
Week 5: Celebrating Maud's Gift, Tuesday 27 August & Thursday 29 August
Join us as we approach the end of our celebration of Maud Heath. Discover how people have commemorated her gift over time and craft your own Maud's monument! Your finished monument could be part of our celebration of Maud to be held on Saturday 14 September as part of Heritage Open Days at the Yelde Hall.
