The Performers
John Mills has been performing both in the UK and internationally for over five decades, both as a soloist and chamber musician. A student of John Williams at the Royal College of Music, he also took part in master classes with Julian Bream and Andres Segovia. He has given a large number of recitals for BBC radio, as well as making many broadcasts as part of concert tours in Scandinavia, North America, SE Asia, Australia and New Zealand, in the last of which he was appointed Head of Guitar at the Nelson School of Music from 1985 – 88. He had earlier held a similar post in the Junior Dept. of the Royal College of Music, and in the late 1980s was appointed as a Professor at the Royal Academy of Music, a position he held for two decades. He was also Head of Guitar at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama from 1991 until 2016, and continues to teach there on a part time basis.
Wendy Partridge is a well-known classical guitarist resident in Dorset where she performs and teaches. Her initial interest in the instrument was sparked when she saw Julian Bream in the BBC TV programme 'Gala Performance.' She then began studying with renowned lutenist, and member of the famous Julian Bream Consort, Robert Spencer, later becoming a student at the Royal Academy of Music, and following this also received coaching from Julian Bream as part of a guitar duo with Esther Sanchez. Wendy has performed as a soloist, accompanist and ensemble player in many concerts throughout the British Isles, and has worked with the actor Jan Wyld giving poetry and music performances. She has also provided music for the theatre and several television documentaries. More recently Wendy plays as one half of the duo Hot Flush combining guitar and vocals to play a mix of folk and light jazz.
Cobie Mills (Smit) comes from Rotterdam in The Netherlands. Following her initial studies at the Conservatoire in that city, she went on to complete her seven-year course at the Royal Conservatorium of The Hague. Following further periods of study in Holland, Sweden and the United Kingdom, she established herself as one of the best-known Dutch classical guitarists from the 1980s onwards, and her performances have taken her to many parts of the EU, as well as Scandinavia, the UK, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. In 1984 she married John Mills, and they moved to Nelson, New Zealand, where as a duo they gave a large number of concerts, including Cobie's performance of the celebrated 'Concierto de Aranjuez' by Rodrigo with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. The duo also performed for HM Queen Elizabeth and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh at a special two-hour event held in Nelson. Cobie has taught widely in the South West of England, and has been classical guitar tutor at Salisbury Cathedral School for eight years.
