Salisbury is really easy to get to and is easily accessible from London (just 90 minutes by train from London Waterloo), nearby airports including Southampton International, Bristol International, London Heathrow and other big cities and towns such as Bristol, Portsmouth and Exeter.
Once you are here there is plenty of things to do. One of the major highlights in a Salisbury agenda is to head to our magnificent early English gothic Cathedral. This grand place of worship has been bringing visitors and pilgrims to the city for centuries and it’s no wonder why. A visit here will have you in awe of the architectural achievements that were made in times gone by.
Within the Cathedral Close you will find a handful of other attractions; The Salisbury Museum, Arundells (the former home of Prime Minister, Sir Edward Heath), The Rifles military museum and the National Trust’s Mompesson House. Plus, by just taking a stroll around you can soak up the beautiful buildings and residences that form this part of the city.
Close by you can also find St Thomas’s Church with its magnificent Medieval ‘doom’ painting depicting judgement day as well as the Market Place which has been holding regular markets since 1227. These days, the main market days are on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
It’s also easy to get to Stonehenge from Salisbury, with regular tour buses running from the city centre and the railway station. You can even stop off at Old Sarum (the original site of Salisbury) as part of your tour, giving you an even more in-depth knowledge of our city, not to mention spectacular views from the ramparts there.
More than just history
It’s not just history here in Salisbury, you will find a strong arts scene throughout the year with highlights including the Salisbury International Arts Festival, the Christmas Market and the biennial Salisbury City Arts Trail.
Check out the artists in residence at Fisherton Mill, the regular exhibitions at The Young Gallery (within Salisbury library) and Salisbury Arts Centre respectively or if sculpture is your thing then pop along to the New Arts Centre at Winterslow.
