The New Forest National Park
Created in 2005, the New Forest National Park is one of the UK's newest National Parks. although the New Forest was established in 1079 when William the Conqueror named the area his ‘new hunting forest’; little could he imagine that nearly 1,000 years later his ‘Nova Foresta’ would still retain its mystery and romance. While the majority of the national park in the neighbouring county of Hampshire, the enclave around both Landford and Nomansland villages sit within Wiltshire. Just 10 miles from Salisbury, the New Forest National Park makes a great day out from the city.
Stonehenge World Heritage Site
A short drive from Salisbury is the iconic Stonehenge, a prehistoric circle welcoming visitors from all over the world! Many are familiar with its links to the rising and setting of the sun during Summer and Winter solstice, as well as its many mysterious conspiracies around how it came about. Learn more inside the Visitor Centre and as you walk amongst the Neolithic Village, which are based on excavated footprints of the houses occupied at the time Stonehenge was constructed! Salisbury Plain
Sitting in the heart of Wiltshire, approximately 12 miles north of Salisbury is Salisbury Plain. Owned by the Ministry of Defence, this land is used as a military training ground. Despite this, there are many delights including plenty of walking routes to embark on. If you are interested in exploring the Salisbury Plain on foot there is the Imber Range Preimeter Path, a long distance walk which gives you views across the landscape. The grassland habitats of the Plain is home to many species of wildlife including the rare Marsh Fritillary Butterfly and the Stone Curlew.
