Enjoy a city break here in Salisbury
You will find more than enough to keep you entertained here in Salisbury. Why not start with a visit to Salisbury Cathedral and Magna Carta? Guides are on-hand to show you some of the fascinating history that can be found in this historic cathedral. Plus, if you have a head for heights then be sure to book onto one of the regular Tower Tours for spectacular views of the city, giving you a real bird’s eye view!
Discover our history in our museums, The Salisbury Museum is just a short stroll from the main entrance to the cathedral and is home to a wealth of artefacts and exhibitions related to our local heritage. The Wessex Gallery is a particular highlight for many as it houses many items related to nearby Stonehenge and the World Heritage Site there. Close by you will also find Arundells, the former home of Prime Minister, Sir Edward Heath, plus The Rifles Museum, dedicated to the local military regiment. Walk slightly further around the Cathedral Close to Choristers Green and you will see Mompesson House, a beautiful Queen Ann-style mansion, now under the care of the National Trust. Check out the grand oak staircase and some of wonderful interiors before heading into the quaint courtyard garden (plus there’s also a tea room here!).
On Tuesdays and Saturdays, you can enjoy the bustling Charter market in addition to the shopping centres and independent shops that are dotted around the city. It’s a great place to pick up fresh fruit and veg, fish, meat or perhaps even something for your home.
Step back in time on a visit to Old Sarum, the original site of Salisbury or visit the World Heritage Site of Stonehenge, just ten miles north of the city. You can combine a trip easily by hopping onto the Stonehenge Tour Bus which runs regularly from the railway station and city centre.
If you want to learn more about the city's history then book onto one of the regular guided city walks with Salisbury City Guides that run from outside Salisbury Information Centre. Plus ghost hunters will enjoy the Friday night ghost walks during the summer nights and the Spooky Spectacular events over Halloween. More information and tickets can be obtained from Salisbury Information Centre.
