Baroque and early folk music - and a chirrup of birdsong
Including music by Handel, Couperin, Arbeau, Cabezon and Albeniz
The programme opens with 16th and 17th century popular dance tunes by Arbeau, Ortiz and Sanz. Guitar solos by their contemporaries Narvaez and Mudarra, and a folksong-based harpsichord solo by Cabezon, will be followed by Handel’s great Sonata in C major for recorder and continuo. In the second half, the focus will turn to 18th century master of French chamber music, Elizabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, in two exquisite dances. Birdsong chirrups will be supplied by an arrangement for the trio from François Couperin’s Suite of avian-inspired nature pieces. Two ‘Songs of Spain’ by Isaac Albeniz, ‘Cordoba’ and ‘Sevilla’, will be the dramatic and colourful finale.
