About
This 6-week course will run from 25 April to 30 May every Tuesday afternoon, from 2pm-5pm. The sessions will be held at Harnham Parish Hall.
The aim of this course is to explore and understand the values and activities that have shaped the landscape, which reach beyond the economic, relating to culture, aesthetic and religion.
Humans have created landscapes, whose functions frequently extend beyond the requirements of food, shelter and the manufacture of material artifacts. This course will consider the humans in relation to their landscapes in the symbolism of monuments created, beliefs, folklore, legends and aspects of social behaviour.
Exploring pre-historic and historical cults, funerary practices, pilgrimage, continuity and changes in cultures and aspects of faith. Lingering beliefs may also preserve scientific and historical theories. There will be critical reference to available evidence, with examples of megalithic monuments, cults of the saints, monasticism and legends including Arthuriana matter. The geographic focus will be on Britain and Ireland.
There will be some optional field visits to be confirmed and programmed to support the course, which will be costed separately. Details of these will be confirmed at the beginning of the course, including dates, subject and price.
