Days out over the summer holidays
There is plenty for you and your family to do here in Salisbury over the summer holidays. Make a trip to The Salisbury Museum and explore the Wessex Gallery with its fascinating displays of finds from the Stonehenge World Heritage Site and the nearby area - perfect for any families with a keen interest in history.
Explore the ruins of the castle and old cathedral at Old Sarum or fly a kite from the nearby Hudson’s field. Not far away you will also find Boscombe Down Aviation Collection, where you can climb into an array of cockpits and aircraft that have been used for test flights or for military operations.
Around ten miles outside of Salisbury, there’s Cholderton Charlie’s Rare Breeds Farm which hosts regular tractor rides, animal-handling sessions and the popular pig racing during the summer holidays. Here you will also find an indoor soft play area, play parks and a treetop adventure trail.
You can also spot farmyard animals on a trip to River Bourne Community Farm in Laverstock. Come along and meet the resident cows, donkeys and other animals on this free day out. Or why not head to Langford Lakes nature reserve to embark on a wildlife walk? Look out for a variety of wetland birds including kingfishers and perhaps even an otter or two.
Travel by the Stonehenge Tour Bus to the World Heritage Site and explore the visitor centre with its hands-on exhibits before journeying onto the world-famous stone circle. You can easily combine your visit with Old Sarum and Salisbury Cathedral too with an all-inclusive ticket.
Children will love exploring the adventure playground in the grounds of Wilton House, just a few miles from Salisbury city centre. Car enthusiasts will also love checking out the Old Riding Stables with Lord Pembroke’s extensive collection of classic and supercars.

Use Salisbury as a base for your summer holiday
Not only is there a lot to do in and around the city but with excellent rail and road links, Salisbury makes an excellent base for exploring further afield. Why not take the train on a short journey to Tisbury (approximately 10 minutes)? From here you can not only enjoy this pretty Wiltshire village but take a walk to the ruins of Old Wardour Castle, now under the care of English Heritage.
Family favourite and star of BBC’s Animal Park, Longleat is only 45 minutes’ drive from the city and is a popular day out. You can also easily travel to Bournemouth and the south coast, Bath and of course the rest of Wiltshire.
