About
Once again Bradford on Avon Choral Society have chosen Holy Trinity Church's enchanting Christmas Tree Festival as the venue for their annual concert of Christmas music and carols, "On Christmas night". This festive musical treat features songs from both past and present: two contrasting versions of "O Magnum Mysterium", one by Spanish composer Victoria written in1572, the other by the American Morten Lauridsen first performed in 1994. This blending of old and new continues with Vaughn Williams' popular "Fantasia on Christmas Carols". This work, first performed in 1912, uses traditional English folk carols in a trademark Vaughn Williams melodic setting. This sees the choir joined by the beautiful baritone voice of Shaun Holley taking the solo part. In contrast, "When Icicles Hang" by John Rutter, although using words written by Shakespeare and his contemporaries, is a much more modern piece showcasing Rutter's dynamic and challenging approach to composition. Shaun Holley will also be heard singing the solo part in the world premier of Roger Lucas' arrangement "A Christmas Lullaby". Supporting the choir in the concert will be local musicians Steve Hollas on the organ, Tony James on piano and cellist Damian Knollys. Of equal importance are the well-known carols for all to sing- standing amongst the Christmas trees, there can be no better way to start the festive season.
