About
"Hauntingly beautiful, compelling, dramatic" these are some of the descriptions of the music that Bradford-on-Avon Choral will be performing at their next concert. John Rutter's Magnificat, first performed at Carnegie Hall in 1990 is a joyous celebration of the Virgin Mary, with both traditional texts and an old English poem to Rutter's lyrical music. In contrast, Stabat Mater, by one of our most popular contemporary composers, Karl Jenkins, is a blend of traditional Western music with influences from the Middle East. It is a blend of classical made more dramatic by the use of modern percussion. It was premiered in 2008 at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral.
As well as the choir and orchestra, the performance will feature three world class soloists: Alicia Carroll, a member of the Gabrielli Consort for over thirty years , sang in the acclaimed televised broadcast and European tour of Jonathan Millar's production of Bach's St Matthew Passion; Marie Elliott, with extensive experience of singing opera and oratorio, was a soloist in the first performance of Messiah in India for sixty years with South West Festival Chorus in 2014; Janie Bradfield, a specialist in North African and Eastern European folk music has performed on radio, television and at the Glastonbury Festival.
Having survived the pandemic by rehearsing on Zoom, Bradford Choral is glad to be back, continuing their thirty six year tradition of quality concerts. they are also excited to be performing pieces by two of Britain's most popular contemporary composers.
